Mexico and Marijuana in the US

Mexico introduces Marijuana to the US

During the 1900-1920's, many Mexican immigrants came to America and with them, Marijuana. Marijuana starting to become a recreational drug, usually associated with Mexican immigrants. The Gulf DTO (Drug Trafficking Orginazation) during the 1920's to supply this new found market with Marijuana. During the 1930's, unemployment was widespread. Immigrants, and their Marijuana, were viewed as taking other peoples jobs and became negatively viewed by society. Twenty-nine states had outlawed Marijuana by 1931.

Drug Trafficking Organizations

Marijuana is the most used drug in Mexico and the United States, with Mexico being the biggest supplier to both. Drug Trafficking Organizations supply Marijuana, and other drugs, to the US and Mexico. With these drugs being illegal it is up to these Organizations to settle disputes through other means than the usual legal ones and as such are usually violent. It is estimated that about 10,000 murders a year occur because of DTO's. DTO's also use bribery to help smuggle drugs across the border, usually by paying off border patrol or other officials. This use of violence and bribery undermines the legitimacy of the Mexican government as they are supposed to have a monopoly on the use of violence. Mexico spends billions of dollars each year trying to stop DTO's. Mexico also works jointly with the US to stop DTO's, with the main goal being to reduce the violence.

Mexican Marijuana Laws

Mexico and the US work together to try and combat DTO's and generally have similar drug laws. With some US states decriminalizing Marijuana, Mexico is attempting to do the same. Bill 706 was introduced February 2014 in Mexico that would legalize medical marijuana. Mexico "can't handle a product that is illegal in Mexico, trying to stop its transfer to the United states, when in the United States, at least in part of the United States, it now has a different status." Mexico will most likely adopt the drug laws of the US, meaning if Marijuana was legalized the US it would not be long before it was also legalized in Mexico.
